Hike The Virungas$500

Having been briefed and assigned a ranger by 07:00am, take to the summit of Mount Bisoke, one of the most sought out Mountains in the Virunga mountain ranges, have a once in a life time opportunity to see the Crater of a Volcanic Mountain. An invigorating experience it is, once you’ve reached the summit, you’d feel so alive as though you’ve conquered. it’s a 6 hours hike - for beginners – to summit and approximately 2 hours to descend to start point. A mere 3 hours for Mountaineers but all promise to be exhilarating for all experience backgrounds. Standing at 3,711 meters this imposing mountain had its last eruption in 1957, having the biggest crater lake. There’s a chance you may see the Gorillas as you hike along.

Golden Monkey Trekking$450

Musanze Caves and Ibyiwacu Cultural Village$450

Akagera National Park - Fishing and Camping $400

At your leisure and will, spend most of your day fishing at the shores of Lake Shakani, tranquilly being one with the wild. It’s a perfect steal away from the hustle and bustle of city life, with Mumbling Hippos and birds providing rhythmic sounds to soot you. Lake Shakani is on the northeast of Akagera Park Headquarters, boasts of bird life, Hippos and Crocodiles but entirely safe for fishing.

Akagera National Park - Game Drive $400

Akagera National Park - Game Drive $400

Nyungwe National Park - Champ the Chimps $450

Another primate hike and trek but this time in the legendary Nyungwe Forest. Located at the Southwestern Trail of Lake Kivu, bordering Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo, this forest is known as Africa’s oldest Montane Forest, home to over 13 species of primates, especially the main attraction, our close relatives – The Chimpanzees.

A rather invigorating, and cheaper hike compared to the Gorillas, for you pace up as you try to keep up with them. The banter and the cackling make it all exciting as you watch these primates swing from tree to tree and you just might see the relationship in other behaviors they exhibit in their habitat, which shows we share 98.7% DNA, also their human instincts are so strong, shown in their immense curiosity and eagerness towards the tourist, most marveling.

Tracking them is relatively easier compared to the Gorillas, as there are over 500 Chimpanzees in the forest, from afar you already here the whoops as you trek also from the L’hoest’s and the black faced velvet monkeys, proving this tour to also be a primatologist’s delight. This tour begins with a gathering at any of the 3 Receptions – Uwinka, Kitabi and Gisakura – at 04:30, a quick brief to ensue and then venture out by 05:00 am to be dropped off at the start point of the trek. Nyungwe National Park - Kamiranzovu Water Falls $450

A refreshing spectacle of the Nyungwe Forest. 17m of plummeting water from several vantage points, depending on how wet you want to get. The short spur puts you on a 50m view away from the fall having some trees obscuring your view, this is close to the picnic bench. Or if you are a thrill seeker, clamber over wet rocks and large boulders through the wild river below and place a steady stance on the big boulder in the middle of the Amphitheatre, putting you almost at the plunge, feeling the thunderous effect of the cascading waters.

A hike of 2.3 km gets you started, taking you through the densely vegetated portion of the rainforest, abundant in ravines and crevasses than any other section of Nyungwe. Meander through it all, making your way through trails pathed with ferns, mosses, lichens even rare flowers with leaves shaped like heart and the delicate fragrant white begonias encircling benches as you are entertained with sights and sounds of bird murmurs, frog croaks and the sight of nonpoisonous harmless snakes – gives you the jungle feeling.

There are many Entrance options to this hike, depending on your preference, be it to save walk miles or catch a glimpse of the orchids. You’ll save 3.2km and 4km if you use Car Park 1 and 2 respectively, but a 4x4 is required for the latter for accessibility purposes due clayey surface and topography. Entrance 2 saves 0.25km with the added advantage of catching the best views of the old Jacarandas and Epiphytic Orchids but you’ll be briefed with maps before commencing the hike and you can make your decisions accordingly.

Nyungwe National Park - Canopy Bridge Walk $510

The misty forest and its inhabitants that abound it are a spectacle to behold, lepidopterists, ornithologists and other scientists are not left out from the thrill to be obtained from this hike having a view of numerous butterfly species, 310 bird species and 121 forest birds ,250 Tree species, 140 types of beautiful orchids including the purple Orchids and a wide array of medicinal plants, all immeasurable.

It’s a wondrous and easy 2 hours hike The Hike begins at Uwinka Reception Centre at 08:00 am or 10:00 am, afternoon hikes starts at 03:00 pm. Hiking shoes are required and can be rented from the reception with Rain Coats/Jackets as it tends to rain certain times of the year. Hiking Sticks can be giving for free at the reception if you do not have one.
